Power Division seeks Rs10 per unit hike in K-Electric tariff amid opposition and concerns

ISLAMABAD: The Power Division has requested National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) to approve a gradual increase of about Rs10 per unit in the tariff that K-Electric charges its consumers.

This move has faced strong resistance from industrialists and politicians in Karachi, who fear the negative economic consequences of higher energy costs.

Nepra’s case officers said that the Power Division’s demand was based on three separate quarterly tariff adjustments, which would raise KE’s average tariff by Rs8.70 per unit, or Rs11 per unit after adding the general sales tax. The industrial sector would face a tariff increase of Rs10 per unit, excluding 18pc GST.
